The Final Harvest

It is hard to pull up the last of the produce that we worked so hard to plant and tend and grow. The main garden is empty again, covered in several cart-loads of pony poo, crimson clover seed, and grass clippings. The small garden is nearly cleared out, its 4-tree "orchard" picked clean. Sigh.
But I must remember that it's not really gone at all. Much of it is canned or frozen or dried. Some of it was gifted to friends and family. And much of it has already been taken in as sustenance -- delicious and nutritious treasures from God's Green Earth.
Look at this wheel barrow-full of taters, for example. See that big boy on top? 1.5 lbs it is. We're hungrily making our way through these. As we were digging them up, The Big Guy said, "We don't do very well with potatoes." I suggested to him that perhaps he should be the one to clean and cook them. From my perspective, we do VERY well with potatoes.

What a cute little cabbage. Mon petit chou chou.

And my pretty, pretty sugar babies. As of yesterday, these don't exist as you see them here any longer. See the one on the far right? Yeah, that one looking all perfect. I almost cried when I put the knife to it. Maybe getting chickens isn't such a great idea after all.

  1. What a nice harvest. I can't wait to be a fellow farmer with you Joodie...growing my own edibles.
